What are we doing, Costa Rica?
What are we doing, Costa Rica?
Cynthia Charpentier
Crime
Why this topic?
On the world level, Costa Rica and communities, Fear exists!
Vehicles, bicycles, houses, insecurity governs.
Security should be for everybody, living in peace is our right.
In Costa Rica, trials can be 4 years later. Do the Police defend me or I defend myself?
“We generate delinquents in Costa Rica? Many are adolescents. Society has to work with us” - Jorge Rojas, OIJ Director.
It starts in families. We need Regional and Institutional groups against drugs.
About Public Security: OIJ works good, the Police too, but what does the goverment do? There are not enough resources.
We need enabling for agents, community organization. Phone intervention about drugs. We need more economical resources.
We have private security. Politicians fight about the topic.
Citizens should demand security, but victims and witnesses of criminal underworld don’t declare out of fear.
It is best not to expose one’s self!
Take good care of credit cards, cellulars, suitcases.
The government doesn’t help.
Social violence exists, national insecurity, death in the streets “Most of the people are scared, we feel insecure. There is a lot of delinquency. Not to walk at night by yourself, for fear of attacks or robberies.” - Jose,Nicaraguense.
Exists social aggression, and the poverty topic connected to education. Sixteen of every hundred people are poor in Costa Rica.
We have to eradicate mental poverty and inferior housing problems and national insecurity.
Increased education helps to eradicate delinquency.
“All countries have this problem. But here they don’t do anything. People do what they want, and police don’t do anything. I can compare to Nicaragua, they act different than here. Cellulares are stolen at the Nicoya Hospital. To steal is nothing; they get out
again immediately. Even to prove anything is hard”. - Ericka.
“There is “paseo millonario” (push you to a cash machine and rob or kill you). It is much in your hands, not to provoke the thiefs. Education
is important. Que barbaridad! The policemen carry out with their duty and they are well equipped. Sometimes there is aggressiveness in marginal communities”. (Mariana).
Why do young people turn to delinquency?
-Consumption - Drugs - Absence of values.
“The delinquent has to go to jail” - Jorge Rojas, OIJ Director.
We should believe in Justice, trust in the courts but the Sistem is insufficient. The citizen get tired and lost faith. They have fear to declare.
“There are many factors: There’s no protection and if a ‘bolo’ (drunk) knocks down a citizen, he goes free in few days. Where is security in Costa Rica?
Insecurity comes from the Goverment, starts there, they are the example, but they don’t have security themselves, neither for their citizens - E, Nicaraguan.
We have to regulate the conciliation; if not the country will never get rid of delinquency.
“National Security is bad, too many robberies, many dead people. We have to have more security. We need enablement for security personal. I don’t feel safe. It is dangerous - Miguel.
We need:
1- Social prevention in Communities.
2- Police intervention
3- Strict Penal System.
“Insecurity? Frequently, it is a reality. I don’t feel safe. I have the impression that if you don’t close the door, somebody is coming in” - Leana.
“This is an insecure country, but about National Insecurity, I don’t know how to fight it” - G.
“Even to mention drugs is dangerous” - L.
“It is more dangerous to shut up, not to denounce. There are phone numbers to report with confidentially. We don’t get enough information. Everything affect severyone - R.
“The Police comes around and they don’t check” - C.
We live behind bars. Our homes are jails. We live with fear.
Costa Rica is a free country, we have to feel free.
Denounce! Education! Collaboration!
Let’s try to keep the closest Police Delegation phone number with us.
Let’s protect ourselves and let’s think of what we can do.
MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!
